William Melland was born in 1788, the son of Francis Melland 1744-1846 of Alport and Middleton near Youlgreave in Derbyshire and his second wife née Sarah Billinge.

He was the owner and manager of local lead mines.

He married Mary Holehouse. She was born in 1760 at Darley Dale in Derbyshire, the daughter of William Holehouse and his wife née Ellen Gill. They lived at Rock House in Alport near Youlgreave in Derbyshire, the family home for over two centuries, and had the following children:

Eleanor Sarah Melland. She was born in November 1811 at Alport. In 1838 she was married at Manchester to Dr John Gregory MRCS of Youlgreave. They had a son Dr John Gregory MD of Rusholme in Manchester (born in 1839), who married Elizabeth Gregory (died 1885) daughter of Richard Gregory of Youlgreave. They had no children. Eleanor Sarah Gregory nee Melland died in 1881.

Charles John Melland. He was born in 1813, and was baptised on 1 November 1813 at Darley. He lived in Rowsley in Derbyshire and was a yarn and cloth agent. He died on 17 February 1909, and was then of Rock House, Alport near Bakewell in Derbyshire (1).

Mary Ann Melland. Also known as Marianne. She was born in 1815, and was baptised on 1 November 1815 at Darley. She became the second wife of Thomas Booth 1809-1884 of Rochdale in Lancashire. He had three children by his first marriage: Annie Booth who was married to M.R. Teasdale JP of Darlington in County Durham and had one child, John Booth, and Thomas Booth who married Eliozabeth Kipling daughter of Edward Kipling JP of Darlington and had five children.

Frederick Melland. He was born on 28 January 1818 at Alport, and was baptised at Youlgreave on 14 April 1818. He became a distinguished surgeon in Manchester, and died on 18 January 1911.

William Edward Melland. He was born on 6 January 1820 at Youlgreave, and baptised there on 6 April 1820. He married twice. His first wife was Helen Hoyle, daughter of James Hoyle of Rochdale in Lancashire whom he married in 1847. She died in 1854. In 1856 he married Hannah Elizabeth Jackson, and they had seven children. He died in 1904 at Middleton Hall near Youlgreave.

John Holehouse Melland. He was born in 1821, and baptised at Youlgreave on 5 February 1822. He married Ellen Rawson , the daughter of William Rawson who was the Treasurer of the Anti Corn Law League. They had a daughter Mary Lucy Melland who married Joseph Melland Smith a contractor and had three children; they emigrated to the United States of America. John Holehouse Melland died in 1851.

Their father William Melland died in 1837, and was buried at Youlgreave on 11 August 18537.

His wife Mary Melland née Holehouse died in 1859 at Chorlton in Manchester, and was buried at Youlgreave on 23 August 1859.
