Francis Melland was born in 1744, the son of William Melland of Alport and Middleton near Youlgreave in Derbyshire and his wife née Ann Steeple.

He was the owner and manager of local lead mines, and constructed Hill Carr Sough. He married four times.

His first wife was Elizabeth Allwood of Youlgreave whom he married at Bakewell in Derbyshire on 16 May 1771. They had a son named Philip Melland who was baptised at Youlgreave on 3 January 1772 and died in the same year. Elizabeth Melland née Allwood died in 1776 and was buried at Youlgreave on 5 December 1776.

Francis Melland married Sarah Billing of Alport at Bakewell on 31 October 1770. They had the following children:

William Melland. He was born in 1788 and died in 1837. He married Mary Holehouse

Ann Melland. She was born in 1800 and baptised at Youlgreave on 6 November 1800.

Their mother Sarah Melland née Billing died in 1800, and their father Francis Melland married Jane Swindell of Stony Middleton in Derbyshire at Bakewell on 23 February 1801. They had the following children:

Mary Melland. She was born in 1805.

Elizabeth Melland. She was born in 1807. He became a chemist and married Elizabeth Cubitt of Alfreton in Derbyshire. They lived in Alfreton and had three sons: William Melland, George Melland, and Arthur Melland.

Stephen Melland. He was born in 1808.

Ann Melland. She was born in 1810.

Their mother Jane Melland née Swindell died in 1811, and was buried at Youlgreave on 5 April 1811.

Their father Francis Melland married Mary Randall at Bakewell on 24 May 1812. They had the following children. all baptised at Youlgreave:

Harriet Melland. She was baptised on 13 September 1812.

Sarah Melland. She was baptised on 30 October 1814.

Jane Melland. She was baptised on 2 June 1816.

William Melland. He was baptised on 15 August 1819.

Christiana Melland. She was baptised on 28 October 1821. She was married to James Robinson of Ashopton Woodlands in Derbyshire. They had six children: Charles Henry Robinson, James Robinson, William Melland Robinson, Georgian Robinson, Maria Robinson, and Frances Robinson.

Charles Melland. He was baptised on 25 April 1824.

Henry Melland. He was baptised on 14 October 1831.

Their father Francis Melland died in 1846, and was buried at Youlgreave on 5 April 1846.

His widow Mary Melland nee Randall died in 1837, and was buried at Youlgreave on 15 October 1837.
