William Melland was the son of Brian Melland and his wife Joanna (maiden surname unknown). Brian Melland lived at Middleton near Youlgreave in Derbyshire, and was the Churchwarden of the parish church at Youlgreave in 1622. He was a younger son of the Melland family of Needham Grange at High Needham in Hartington parish in Derbyshire (1). He died on 2 August 1635.
He was probably born in Hartington parish in Derbyshire before 1610. He lived at Middleton, and was Churchwarden of Youlgreave in 1661 and again in 1664.
In about 1628 he married Elizabeth (maiden surname unknown). Their children were:
John Melland. He was born in 1629. He died in 1645 and was buried on 3 September 1645 at Lomberdale in Middleton near Youlgreave, now Lomberdale Hall.
Maria Melland. She was born on 10 August 1632.

Francis Melland. He was born on 28 January 1640, the twin of his sister Elizabeth Melland. He was appointed Overseer in 1696. He died at Middleton in 1696 and was buried at Youlgreave on 9 January 1699.
Elizabeth Melland. She was born on 28 January 1640, the twin of her brother Francis Melland.
Their father William Melland died in 1674. His Will is dated 4 January 1674 (new style) and was proved in the same year.
His widow Elizabeth Melland died on 17 January 1682 (new style) and was buried at Youlgreave.

(1) The date of his birth and baptism are unknown, as the parish registers of Hartington are not extant before 1610. Another Brian Melland who lived at Biggin in Hartington parish was his cousin.
