William Melland was born in 1710 the son of William Melland 1675-1725 of Alport near Youlgreave in Derbyshire and his wife née Dorothy Goodwin, the daughter of Joseph Goodwin of Hurdlow in Derbyshire and his wife Margaret (maiden surname unknown).

He married Ann Steeple of Aldwark in Derbyshire. He was an owner and manager of local lead mines. They lived at Middleton-by-Youlgreave in Derbyshire, and had the following children:

William Melland. He was born at Alport on 17 December 1738 and died in 1816. He was a Captain in the Army, and a bachelor.

Ann Melland. Also known as Hannah. She was born in 1741 and died in 1824 at Alport. She was married to John Melland 1731-1797 at Bakewell in 1758, and died in 1797 at Monyash.

Stephen Melland. He was born in 1742 and died in 1820. He was a surgeon and lived in Bakewell in Derbyshire. He was twice married. In 1768 he married Ann Watkinson 1740-1779. She was the daughter of Godfrey Watkinson of Brampton Manor in Derbyshire, and the widow of Jonathan Birch of Manchester. His second wife was Mary Allwood of Meadow Place near Youlgreave in Derbyshire, and the widow of Mr Smedley. She died in June 1828 aged 86 years.

Francis Melland 1744-1846.

Elizabeth Dorothy Melland. She was married to W. Grey, a London solicitor, and died in 1815.

Their father William Melland died in 1764 at Middleton-by-Youlgreave.
