Louisa Maulton was born in 1820 at Ilam in Staffordshire, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Maulton of Slade House Farm in Ilam. She was baptised at nearby Waterfall in Staffordshire on 16 October 1820.
On 16 June 1842 she was married to William Cowgill at the Collegiate Church in Manchester (1). He was born in 1805 at Lepton in Kirkheaton parish near Huddersfield in Yorkshire, the son of William Cowgill 1767-1825. He moved to Manchester, where he became a print and calico merchant in that city.
They had a daughter Elizabeth Anne Cowgill. She was born in 1842 at Manchester, and was baptised on 26 February 1843 at St Paul's church in Manchester. In 1862 she was married to Francis Pershouse 1841-1923 at Barton-on-Irwell near Manchester. She died on 13 July 1903 in Torquay.
When the Census was taken in 1851 they were living at 7 Old Trafford, Stretford New Road in Manchester. By 1861 the address was recorded as 8 Old Trafford Terrace. In 1871 they were lodging at 3 Portland Terrace in Hastings, Sussex. William Cowgill was then recorded as living on "Railway Dividends". By 1881 they were resident at Portland House, Totnes in Devon.
William Cowgill died on 5 March 1886 at Totnes.
His Will was proved in Exeter on 9 April 1886 (2).
Louisa Cowgill née Maulton died on 18 August 1899 at Paignton in Devon.
Her Will was proved in London on 23 September 1899 (3).
The daguerreotype of Louisa Cowgill née Maulton is believed to have been made by Charles Allen Du Val, and is included by kind permission of the owner Dr Alan Lloyd-Smith.
